Laird Hamilton. Part man, part Poseidon. He is the greatest living surfer, no doubt about it. He's also wicked smart, he's invented dozens of water sports, including the one shown below with the oar. You stand on your surf board and paddle yourself out with the oar, and then use it to guide yourself through the waves. He's pointed out what's so great about it is getting to see the floor of the ocean on your way out. You miss so much when you're laying on your board.
Here is he, surfing the most technically difficult wave on the planet, Teahupoo (it's in Tahiti)
He demonstrates the foil board in this one - this surf board boggles the mind. It has a fin attached to the underside of the board, that allows you to literally glide a foot above the water - no shit. It gives you the capability to ride a wave up to 100'. Again, no shit. I should mention that he invented the foil board...kinda sorta. The fin itself was already designed, but not perfect. It was the bottom half of something called an air chair. It was Laird's idea to saw the seat off of the chair and attach the "fin" to the bottom of a surf board, just to see what would happen. He's a genius.
