Marrow of Life

Brightest blessings to her and all searching for an answer and healing.

My friend who gave birth last week kept hers but there are different ways of doing it. I'm not up on the insides and out of it all but she chose the more affordable way, which you know, unless you're rich you can't do much better than that.

I knew one person who went for the (whatever it is) kind that either lasts longer or something...anyway, she never needed it but it was a piece of mind for her family. It's there. It's yours. We have that technology, at least.

You're my hero for trying. This post is inspirational. I haven't been able to give blood for years because either my blood pressure/iron count is too low, or I keep traveling to countries which are on the 'no no' list.

But this I may be able to do. Thank you for spreading the word.

This is excellent information. Many best wishes to Angela in her quest.
And anyone in that situation. I would happily give my cheek cells for the cause!

yeah, I need to edumacate myself on the preservation of cords. I know very little about that...I've always heard about people keeping the placenta and doing all sorts of bizarre things with it, but not the cord. Well, except for the stem cell research stuff, so I guess I have heard about it. I assume freezing is somehow involved...
Yes - donating marrow appears to be less discriminatory than blood donating. They didn't even ask about travel to other countries, just meds, illnesses, etc. And tattoos aren't an issue, either.
I'm glad I did it. So yeah, keep an eye out, an opportunity may arise!
Maybe because the recipients don't have that luxury...Like I'm turned down for blood, as I like to say, "Cos I gots the Mad Cow."

Wow....that's the one thing that I currently can't do is give blood or marrow. Not for a while at least. BUT banking the cord blood is certainly worth the time. Even if we don't use it....someone else can.

I have a friend of mine who did it for all 3 of her sons and it was fortunate as the oldest of the 3 was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia when he was about 6 months old. There is no cure for sickle cell, but the fact that the cord blood was banked certainly helps. He's had several emergency blood transfusions, but they didn't realize they could use it until well after this was done. The last blood transfusion was with his cord blood and he's been out of the hospital for more than a year now. In his 6 years, that's the longest time he's been out of the hospital. Apparently using cord blood for a sickle cell patient helps to keep them out of what they call "crisis".
Oh that's so GREAT that you are going to do that!

And what an amazing story about your friend's family!! I hope that little boy continues on his new, healthier path. How incredible, the difference that cord blood made. Wow.
