Here's an idea, dumbass: DON'T GET A DOG - AT ALL

In a bad way. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I believe they've been doing this in Japan for a while--it's too crowded to keep pets so they rent them.

This treats animals as consumables regardless of the animals' needs. And when it's dogs, who need a secure and steady home--especially the homeless ones--it's the worst kind of exploitation. The people who'd use it are no better...
It is the worst kind of exploitation, I agree. It's just SO effing selfish. I mean, WHY this sort of service for rescued dogs when there are so many other ways to makes their lives worthwhile aside from finding them homes? Lots of therapy dogs are rescues, and dogs that do prison rehabilitation, etc.
And another thing is, if a dog is getting older and sick, or even develops a type of sickness that happens abnormally early in life...who is going to be the person that can identify that there may be something wrong with him/her? Sometimes you have to constantly be around an animal to get to know their behavior so if something is "off" you can tell. Ack!
omg. this is so horrible. you know what, i've been making this dark joke for years, to my friends, but about human children...how if we we're too busy and self-centered to our children the full-time care and attention they need, well heck, no need to deprive ourselves of the enjoyment of having them regardless--let's just time-share a bunch of kids and rotate custody throughout the group...

I cannot. believe. it is actually. happening. those poor dogs.

I know, dude. It's actually happening.

*snirk* at your dark joke. It's only a matter of time.

Not to rain on anyones winey parade but its an F'n dog not a human. They were on the streets and now they are getting three square meals a day and a warm dry place to sleep. I have an idea lets b'tch about the service till it dies and then just put those dogs down because no one is there to take care of them. What, can you guys not think past the end of your nose? Or are you 12?
Thanks for visiting my blog and sharing you opinions on the proper care of animals. Clearly you've missed my point about being a responsible pet owner.

Well said, DKN. I had not heard about this kind of service. The only thing the ad copy appears to be missing is the promise to find you a rental pet that matches your decor.

Welcome to Vox.
I see you are new, like today.
Maybe you'll want to look around a little to get a better idea of the level of discourse in these parts.
Disagree all you want, but personal abuse is not really necessary.
I mean, you may have a point, but I'm not likely to really give it much thought since you have wrapped it up in an unwarranted ad hominum attack.

And, by the way, I think you mean whiny rather than winey.
Unless -- Carlisa? Morgat? Have you been slipping DKN some of that rum?

There is a service down here called Rent a Hubby. get that ta do list done.
Haha Sweet Misery. Sound like my kind of town! :)

well the thing that gets me about this comment is seeing the common shelter as the only option we have for dogs in this country which is SO untrue. There are rescue orgs, no kill and low kill shelters, etc. There are alternatives. And I think that those of us who know anything about dogs are aware that passing a vulnerable dog off from person to person while being cared for by a staff just isn't the way to go. The assumption that dogs WILL be able to handle that setting IS seeing them more like humans than those who believe that dogs belong to a pack, a family. I wasn't equating dogs with human emotions, just the opposite.
Hi, DKN.
I was glad to read your original post...I missed it the first time around.
Very good information and the post and the comments (with one exception, "Whatever") are making me do some deep thinking.

I suppose there are a few happy-go-lucky, adaptable dog types out there that would not mind something like this. But, it seems to me they would be very few and far between. Most dogs need the stability, routine and security of a "pack" to be happy and healthy.

I can't see how this could work well at all.

HA to IG's idea. Well, it's too late for me...my kids are all raised. :P
I think the thing that turns my stomach is the FURTHER commodification of joy and life. Just when I thought we'd gone as far as possible. Want to spend a few hours with a dog, but don't want to own one? Commodity solution: just rent a dog, instead of, oh, I don't know: volunteering at a local animal shelter.
exactly so, redz. that's how i feel about my nieces and nephews, of course. i borrow them from my sister for a few hours, spoil them rotten and feed them candy and junk food, then return them to my sister so she can deal with the fallout. it's the perfect solution for MEEEE! heaven forbid i should consider making a real commitment to another living being or anything. *snort*
exactly!! thank you! Bingo!

And I think it's laughable that this organization claims that they help you teach your children responsibility...I really cannot wrap my head around that. #1 it's stupid to get your kids pets just to teach them responsibility - this practice leads to nothing but cases of neglect and #2 how in the world is having other people look after your animals daily needs responsible?
Hey, you might want to go over to itchmo.com --

I wonder if we've found your penpal?
At the very least, it's interesting to see who the mastermind behind this scheme is.
: - O Wow. It never ceases to amaze me how low people will go. Thanks for sending that on!

What was in the yahoo link? That one wouldn't work for me...was it just the story that on the front page of itchmo?
Yes, it's the same itchmo story, sorry about the bad link.
So, not just a bad idea, but probably a scam as well.
there is something about it that reeks of scam, yes. Oy.
